Where kids come first!

The Sumter Youth Center (SYC) is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit, community-based organization serving the social service needs of youth and families on the north and south ends of Sumter County. Our goal is to enable those we serve to adapt and contribute productively in our multi-cultural society. SYC began in 2001 as a joint project of Sumter County Community leaders. Since 2001 SYC has grown to serve hundreds of youth and families throughout the Sumter County Area. On May 21, 2002 SYC successfully opened the doors to its Wildwood center. Our combined facilities have more than 34,000 square feet of recreation areas, including outdoor basketball courts, computer labs, classrooms, table games, and snack bar areas.

Our Mission

We need your help!

The research is clear: children in quality after-school programs are more likely to come to school and stay in school, more likely to hand in their work and get better grades.  YOU can make an impact on the life of a child AND your community by getting involved at the Sumter Youth Center.

Testimonials

Growing up and being in the Sumter Youth Center

As a parent that not only has a child that has attended the center for several years, but also attended the center myself there is so much good I see in this center. As a parent, it makes me so happy knowing while I’m working my child is somewhere he loves to be. From the wonderful teachers, to the lovely volunteers, I know my child is in great hands. As a parent who doesn’t get off and make it to pick up my child until 5:30, I love knowing he is getting help with his homework. Getting a snack and a drink and having time to socialize with friends. Basketball, four square, pool, movies and computer time are just of the many things I hear him enjoying on a daily basis. The center is a great and valuable part of the community and I’m sure my family is not the only one that sees’s all the great this center offers.

As a supporter of the Sumter Youth Center for many years, I am very much impressed by the genuine caring and attention the children receive from all the staff.  A great deal of time is especially devoted to helping the children with improving their reading skills and understanding and completing their school homework with volunteer mentors.

In addition, there are so many fun activities offered such as bus trips to Orlando Science Center and Aquatica, learning how to plant and maintain a garden, playing a musical instrument, singing in a choir, participating in sports, along with many other wonderful experiences.

I also have noticed the emphasis put on being polite, having good manners, following directions,  completing assigned tasks and having respect for others.

I highly recommend the Sumter Youth Center.   I feel that the centers provide a safe and nurturing environment, and that the staff genuinely care for these children, and the children sense that.
